I am still glowing.
It started with a planning committee. We decided that the 3,4,5th graders would watch it streamed live into the auditorium and the prek-2nd grade would do a parade.
We decided all teachers would wear formal wear in red, white and blue.
I was literally too excited to sleep last night.
How often do you get to wear your wedding dress to school as an elementary school teacher? It was awesome. The students were reasonably well behaved (as a drama teacher, my standards are VERY HIGH!!!!!, screaming their heads off every time Obama was shown.
I am not a fan of prayer in school. I'm one of those teachers who stands respectfully and quietly duing the pledge, hoping to create teachable moments. I can't explain the power that I felt, watching an auditorium of kids, many of which don't speak all that much English, murmuring that prayer. It was really moving to me.
I didn't fall apart during the ceremony. It was HUGE, but I held it together. It was during the PreK parade, with each class marching around the first floor of our school, that I lost it. Each class had their own chant, like "YES WE CAN", "SI SE PUEDE", ROCK, OBAMA, etc etc etc...
An ESL kindergarten passed me with sashes on that read "PRESIDENT __________, with their name in the blank, of course. I blubbered.
I spent the rest of the afternoon in a weird afterglow that I knew would fade and lead to reality. He's got a blank slate- we'll see what he does with it now.
I won't forget this day, even if he ends up being Another Politician.

Oh, man... Did I need today...
I'm in search of simple, not STUPID scripts for fairy tales. If anyone has any recommendations, that'd rock.
I am watching bits and pieces of Harold And Kumar go to white castle. Wow. I can't think of a stupider, more enjoyable movie. I wish that Guantanamo Bay was on Watch Immediately on Netflix- I can't really justify ordering it. I don't think J will watch it.
I told a parent about my LJ (in the context of Tamora Pierce's...) I ought to go back and read my posts to make sure everything's family appropriate... I'm feeling lazy...
OMG this is my favorite part of H&K: When Wilson Phillips comes on the mix tape... Ridiculous but fabulous.
Will try and write a better post tmw/.
Where IS that book I got for chanukah?

Saw Benjamin Button today. It IS a curious case! If you are able to ignore holes in a story and enjoy something silly but pretty to look at, you might like this movie.2 comments - Leave a comment
Got the check today, now we just have to play the shell game and figure out where it goes!
I need to see a doctor... The numbness in my fingers is getting worse. It doesn't help that typing on this damn computer is so infuriating!!
Who wants to come over and help us build bookshelves and a shed?
|Jan. 1st, 2009 09:57 pm Thank you, CHOWHOUND!|
OK! Version 3.something of "I'm going to post every day".Leave a comment
New Year's Eve was lovely, once we got the errands done, we wished we could have had less cancellations but the weather was inclement, feh...
We saw the tippy tops of the fireworks from GAP- maybe next year we'll try the roof.
It was nice after guests left, too. :)
Messed around on CHOWHOUND today and not only found a FANTASTIC Indian restaurant willing to deliver to my house (dinner: lamb kurma, garlic naan, samosas and giggle inducing "Dilder Chicken" which involved a creamy curry and pineapple. Something I thought J would like...)
but I am reading a thread about restaurants with funky rules a la Soup Nazi and came across this quote:
You reminded me of a sign hanging in a local coffee shop,
"Unattended children will be given a new puppy and shot of espresso."
I like that.
I will pull out my new book of journal prompts and get serious very,, very soon.
Till then, I hope today was a good day, an indicator that your year will be great.

Who is coming and when?Leave a comment
We opened it up to be an All Day Open House in case things got crowded (it's a small house, after all) but now we don't know who is coming (or who we remembered to invite!).
So, please. If you were invited, and assume you were, please tell us APPROXIMATELY what time to expect you. Like which part of the day.

We got one and a half more rooms painted today. It is going very slowly but we are almost done.4 comments - Leave a comment
I am so tired that by the time I opened this window and clicked on post I had forgotten what I wanted to post about.
It was a question.
Can anyone recommend a slightly boring but somewhat interesting podcast to fall asleep to? Something like that old show on PBS where they describe the connections between two things- I think it was actually called CONNECTIONS... Fascinating but really easy to fall asleep to...
After the move I will start using my lovely new writers prompts books I got for Chanukah.
As for holiday traditions-
I love our thematic gingerbread house building parties, xmas cookies, latkes and New Year's Eve.
I love peppermint flavored everything and eggnog.
I love seeing friends and family.

Next weekend: Painting the apartment (ALL ARE WELCOME TO COME JOIN IN THE FUN!)3 comments - Leave a comment
Following weekend: MOVE IN!!!!!!!!!!!! (same. you know there's nothing more fun than helping someone else move! Pizza and beer !
The FOLLOWING weekend:Time for Gingerbread! This year's theme is CAROUSEL. The ride, not the musical.
If you can't make it during the weekend, come by any time that week. We'll be home, moving in slowly to the apartment. Come add something beautiful and delicious to the carousel! Come paint a wall. Whatever floats your boat.
The final revelry will be New Year's Eve. Instead of teh usual evening party, we're opening it up to the full day. Come by any time. We'll have hot cider for you and show you around the new place. Maybe we'll be cooking up some yummy snacks. Later on, we'll see if we can see the Grand Army Plaza fireworks from our yard. 'Think J will let us make a bonfire?
